The author recently examined a 13.15 ct blue oval mixed-cut sapphire that contained a striking inclusion scene (see above). Careful microscopic observation revealed that the inclusions consisted of particle clouds close to the surface of the stone. The clouds featured a distinctive angular shape; they were aligned and stacked in a repeating pattern that suggested a Madagascar origin. The stone was faceted at an angle that accentuated these uniquely patterned particle clouds, which resembled tire tracks in snow.
