Searching for Emeralds in Afghanistan
GIA field gemologists are a different breed. When Andy Lucas, GIA manager of Field Gemology in Carlsbad, decided to take some vacation time, he didn’t make for the usual destinations. No beaches, ski resorts, or cosmopolitan cities. Lucas instead headed off to Afghanistan, lured by deposits of fine emeralds.
